Vertical Challenge 2006 On the San Francisco Peninsula, just a few miles south of San Francisco International Airport, the San Carlos Airport was once again host to the Hiller Aviation Museum's 7th annual Vertical Challenge Helicopter Air Show. Held on Saturday June 17th, the show finally broke its attempt to reach 50 helicopters on display, with 51 in attendance. The museum holds their annual Open House at the same time, giving visitors much more to look at throughout the day, with speakers inside and interactive displays. The helicopter show is scheduled as a two-part show with a break in between, but this years show almost seemed to meld it itself into one. During the brief break, local aircraft made departures and arrivals with a number of nice show type aircraft using the pattern. Performers for the show included Otto the Clown Helicopter, Remote Control Helicopters, the Bay Area Sundowner Kite show, The ShowCopters, and various search and rescue demonstrations. A flying tribute to both Hiller and Bell helicopters saw a parade of helicopters flying in the pattern. Probably the most numerous helicopters on the ramp were Robinson R22 and R44 helo's followed by Bell, with Jet Rangers and the Hueys. The SAH has a good number of members that are also Hiller Museum volunteers and docents, so I ran into a lot of our membership at this event. There are a lot of thumb pictures on this page, so give the page a minute to load if you have dial-up service. There is text attached to all the photographs.
