The 38th
Annual National Championship Air Races 2001
What was
hoped to be a fun September of racing turned into
the cancellation of the Reno Air Races, due to
the attack on the United States of America. All
aircraft were grounded during the week of the
planned Air Races, and everybody held their
breath, hoping that the races would continue. On
Friday an announcement was made that the races
were cancelled, as VFR (Visual Flight Rules) had
yet to be lifted. Some of the IFR (Instrument
Flight Rules) aircraft were able to leave and fly
home, but most of the racing aircraft (non IFR)
were to remain at the airport. Everyone was there
to race, and were able to start qualifing on the
monday preceding the attack, thus all the racers
expected were present, along with crews and
equipment. A number of the aircraft taxi'd around
on the ramp or did engine runups, but did not
fly. All photographs and captions in this series
are from Roger D. Cain (NC 148).
