Flugtag in
San Francisco
"Flugtag"
(Fly Day in German) was hosted by the sports
drink maker Red Bull and was attended by an
estimated crowd of 20,000 spectators. Several
friends emailed me about this event just before
it happened and I decided to go. It was held at
Piers 30-32, and was a free event, held on
October 26, 2002. With 100 entries submitted only
35 qualified for this event, with creativity, not
aerodynamics in mind. The farthest launches were
just a bit over 40 feet, and safety was a main
concern with jet ski teams assisting after each
splashdown. All craft were removed from the San
Francisco Bay via a crane on a barge, after each
flight. I did not attend this event as media,
thus there were a number of heads and arms in
front of me I had to try to avoid. I hope you
enjoy this SF inaugural event and let me know if
I have a craft that is incorrectly identified. My
online story about this event is available at: Pacific
Flyer. Note: the
first three pictures have a series at the links,
scroll down the page.
Photographs have captions underneath the
pictures. All photographs and captions in this
series are from Roger D. Cain (NC 148).
