The Doolittle Festival of Flight 2003 On April 17th at the Nut Tree Airport, nine Doolittle Raiders and 3 honorary guests were honored at a reunion to mark the 61st Anniversary of the Doolittle Raid. On April 18, 1942, Jimmy Doolittle and his raiders, launched sixteen B-25 medium bombers off of the carrier USS Hornet, and attacked five cities in Japan. Below are a few of the aircraft that participated in this Air Show type of event. At this event but missing from my pictures, was Dan Martin and his P-51 Mustang "Ridge Runner III". While the main events were held at nearby Travis AFB, from April 15-18, this day was the fly day, with 82 paid passengers between the three B-25's. Some of our members that I saw and spoke with were Earl Holmquist (NC 47), Lou DePropris (NC 438) and Bill and Tillie Larkins (NC 5 & NC 306). Photographs have captions underneath the pictures, click on photo for a larger picture. All photographs and captions in this series are from Roger D. Cain (NC 148). |
