   Presidents Message for January, 2010

Let me start off by wishing you all a Happy New Year! Reflecting back on 2009, we had another extremely successful year. Five educational meetings, five newsletters, and our big Summer special edition, our website looks great, all under our belt from 2009.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Fall Food Drive at the October meeting and the Teen Toy Drive in December. Both were successful beyond expectation, and we thank you for your generosity. More than 100 pounds of canned food was delivered to the Second Harvest Food Bank, and photos from the toy drive can be seen on our website at: www.sfahistory.org/meetings.htm

If you were not at the December meeting, you missed a great one. Before the event got underway, we recognized the volunteers that make this organization run. They include your board of directors: Roger Cain, Gela DePutter, Alice Hendricks, Norm Jukes, Matthew Mintz, Dan Morgan, Rick Turner, and Betty Veronico. In addition, we have a number of committees and other folks that support the meetings and performs the tasks that keep this organization running: Bruce Bengston (Elections), Darlene Cain, Andy Melomet (Video committee), Lee Scales (Prizes and Donations), Bill Stubkjaer (Trivia). Thank you all for your time and willingness to participate!

During the year Matthew Mintz and Betty Veronico transitioned off the board and Paul Schwaffel and Rick Pisio were elected to serve at the December meeting. We're greatful for Matthew's and Betty's service, and welcome Paul and Rick to the board.

For the sixth consecutive year the board of directors was able to hold dues to $25 per person/family. This is excellent news, and as we said, repeatedly and in jest at the December meeting: "Your dues are due in January." The society's board of directors believes the SAH is one of the best values in aviation history education for the price. For your $25 you receive a name badge and society lapel pin, five educational programs, six newsletters, and for 2010 it looks like we'll have two tours as well. Remember to mail your dues in January, and consider introducing a friend to the society. Membership makes a great gift, too.

Our slate of speakers for 2009 was simply fantastic. Our thanks to each of them for their time and generosity! To see a review of our meetings, please visit: www.sfahistory.org/meetings.htm

The slate of speakers for 2010 is shaping up nicely. On Feb. 6, SAH member Larry Rinek will present an F-106 talk and pilots panel discussion; for the April 10 meeting, Cdr. Peggy Stephan will discuss her two tours Antarctic Development Squadron Six (VXE-6) flying the LC-130 Hercules to McMurdo Station, Antarctica. How's that for a great way to start the new year? See you in February.

- Nick Veronico
