NorCal History: Did You Know?

A rare plane visited San Francisco on August 4, 1941. This was the 65th Lockheed 18 "Lodestar" built. It was manufactured on December 31, 1940 and delivered to the U. S. Navy for the use of the Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox. The SecNav rank placard of four stars and an anchor can be seen on the left engine nacelle. The vertical tail surfaces and engine nacelles are painted Admiral Blue that was the standard for Command Planes in the 1930s. There is something special about this photo that might not be noticed - it was taken through a cyclone fence. The shadow of the fence can be seen in the foreground.
